HADDEN INDUSTRIES

Firmware and machines for the OP–XY, all in one place.

Stay on OP–XY OS 1.2.1: don’t install a newer official update until HADDEN supports it. A newer one replaces HADDEN, and HADDEN can only be built from 1.2.1.

Put your OP–XY in file transfer mode

  1. Switch it off. Hold com while you switch it on.
  2. Press track 3 for dev menu, then track 2 for mtp file transfer (mac).
  3. Connect it to this Mac with USB. Quit Field Kit and OpenMTP if they’re open.
  4. Press track 3 for dev menu, then track 3 for mtp file transfer (windows).
  5. Connect it to this computer with USB and open it in File Explorer. Copy os.ldr from its upgrade › firmware › blackfin › bin folder to this computer.
Not on OS 1.2.1 yet, or it won’t start?
Install teenage engineering’s official OS 1.2.1 first: download OS 1.2.1 from teenage engineering. Hold com while you switch it on, press track 1, connect USB, copy the file to the disk that appears and eject it. The update runs by itself; then come back here.
No 3. dev menu on the screen?
With your OP–XY at that screen and connected by USB, turn it on here (allow MIDI when Chrome asks). Then press track 8, and track 8 again, to refresh the screen.

Install

Choose the os.ldr you copied, then download HADDEN as a ZIP. Extract it, and drag everything in it onto your OP–XY in File Explorer, replacing files. Your projects and samples stay as they are.

Reads your OP–XY’s own OS, checks it is OS 1.2.1, builds the HADDEN firmware with every machine, and sends it. Your projects and samples stay as they are.

    No USB?
Choose your os.ldr (from upgrade/firmware/blackfin/bin/ on your OP–XY) and download the files instead. Copy everything in the ZIP to the top of your OP–XY with Field Kit or OpenMTP, replacing files, then do step 3.

    Write it on the OP–XY

    1. Press track 2 for exit.
    2. Press track 5 for write os to boot partition. Don’t switch it off while it writes.
    3. When firmware written ok! appears, switch it off and on again. It starts with HADDEN.
    2Add everything

Plug in your OP–XY, press com then T4 on it, then:

    Or pick what you like

Effectsecho, reverb, chorus and more for the whole mix, as files

On the MIX page, go to its second page, hold shift and press M2, and choose Effects. Press any knob for page 2: the white knob (the fourth) picks the effect, and it changes once you stop turning. The other knobs are the effect’s own, named on the screen. Turn the white knob all the way for the rack: all four at once, knobs 1–4 how much of each. The same effects work on the send tracks too: on T15 or T16 choose HADDEN FX. FX 16 racks (marked FX 16) are effects written as a few lines of text, which the OP–XY compiles itself.

Plug in your OP–XY→press com then T4→click Add
    Make your own effect
    1. Describe it to Claude: “make an effect that…”, and it writes the effect and adds it here. Or start from the template: effect.cpp, effect.json and fx.h.
    2. An effect is one small C++ file with two parts: one runs when it’s chosen, the other changes the sound, 64 samples at a time. It has up to 64 KB of memory for echoes and the like.
    3. Put the files in effects/<name>/ in the repository and push: the cloud builds it.
    4. An effect file runs as code on your OP–XY, so only add ones you trust: yours, or built here from source you can read.
    5. Copy the .wav to your OP–XY as samples/effects/fx1.wav (to fx4.wav) and restart.
HADDEN 16games that are instruments, and make your own

Put HADDEN 16 on a track (hold shift, press M1), then press any knob for page 2: the white knob picks the cartridge.

Make your own in the cartridge maker →

Pocketgames for the original monochrome handheld, yours or free ones

Put Pocket on a track (hold shift, press M1): the white knob picks the game, and the keys are its buttons.

    Your own game

Choose a .gb game (up to 512 KB). Only use games you're allowed to: your own, or free ones. It stays on your computer until you send it.

Then press T4 and switch the OP–XY off and on. On Pocket's page, turn Game to pick it. Free games and the key map →

Capturekeep what you just played, without having pressed record

Built into HADDEN, nothing to add. Play along while the project plays, not recording; then double-tap record and the track's sequence becomes what you just played, up to the track's length. Changed your mind? Undo. Capture is Open–XY's own, used as it comes.

Your filessamples, presets and projects on your OP–XY: look, add, back up

Plug in your OP–XY, press com then T4 on it, then:

On Windows, open your OP–XY in File Explorer instead (press com then T4 on it). The project backup below needs a Mac.
